About Tourism-Zero

Tourism-Zero is an ambitious international project funded by the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in the field of Higher Education programme, lasting 3 years and involving partners and Higher Education institutions from Thailand, Laos, China, Greece and Spain.

The project aims to support two Higher Education Institutions in Thailand (Chiang Mai University & Prince of Songkla University), two in China (Chengdu University & Yunnan University) and two in Lao PDR (Savannakhet University & National University of Lao) to boost the quality and relevance of their academic offer to the challenges of environmental degradation in their countries and to the market needs for sustainable zero-waste management.

Tourism-Zero Steps

Throughout its 3-year duration, the Tourism-Zero consortium will undertake specific steps to achieve its objectives and promote in practice a zero-waste, sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism model in South East Asia.

Assessment of knowledge and skills demand for a zero-waste hospitality and tourism sector

The consortium will conduct an in depth research focused at the on the existing gaps and the needs of the tourism workforce in the targeted countries: Thailand, Laos and China.

Based on the previous assessment and together with the exchange of good practices from the EU partners, the consortium will develop the blueprint for the development of tailored non-degree courses targeted at tourism students and academic staff. In essence, 4 specific courses will be developed:

  • Course 1: Responsible Consumers and Global Warming Impacts of Waste
  • Course 2: Zero Waste in Tourism Activities
  • Course 3: Waste Management under Municipal Context
  • Course 4: Environmental Impact Assessment

Those courses will be hosted in an online platform. After the finalization of the course contents – a dedicated training activity will be organized targeted at the academic staff of the participating Asian Universities on how to deliver those courses to their students

The developed courses will be registered in the 6 participating Universities’ offer, as elective courses, open to their own students, but also made available/open to students/participants from other HEIs, in MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) format. A 12-month pilot delivery of the courses will take place with 480 students in total.

As part of the pilots, a number of placements/traineeships for the students in hospitality and tourism enterprises will be organized by the 6 Asian HEIs for a total number of approx. 125 students (40 for Thailand, 50 for China and 35 for Lao PDR) for a period of 3- 6 months, either during or after the courses’ completion.

The online courses (MOOC) will also be made available/open to enterprises of the hospitality and tourism sector in all 3 Asian countries. In total, 60 enterprises are foreseen to collaborate and 170 employees to be trained across all three participating Asian countries.
