Shaping the Future of Sustainable Travel: Tourism-Zero In Action

On May 13, 2026, the College of Arts, Media and Technology (CAMT), alongside the Department of Tourism, Faculty of Humanities at Chiang Mai University (CMU), successfully hosted the academic forum: “Tourism-Zero in Action: Designing Zero-Waste Tourism for the Future Workforce” at the Doi Luang Conference Room, Kantary Hills Hotel, Chiang Mai. The event was conducted under the Tourism-Zero Project, funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education Programme. The event aimed to promote the four courses on Zero-Waste Tourism while strengthening sustainability-related and zero-waste management skills among students, tourism professionals, and hospitality stakeholders. The event also provided platform and opportunity for academic staff and industry partners to exchange ideas on future workforce development and Zero-Waste practices. 

This event brought together 55 participants, including university staff, students, hotel and spa partners, tour guides, and local businesses, to exchange ideas, experience, perspectives and collaborate on Zero-Waste Tourism practices and sustainability in Tourism and Hospitality sector in Chiang Mai and beyond. 

Key highlights from the Event:

• New curricula: The forum promoted four innovative courses designed to equip students and industry professionals with essential zero-waste management skills.

• Expert insights: A special seminar brought together voices from academia and local hospitality to exchange real-world ideas on sustainable transition under the them: “Tourism-Zero in Action: Designing Zero-Waste Tourism for the Future Workforce”. 

• Global collaboration: This initiative highlights the powerful impact of international cooperation between universities and the private sector to protect our environment.

By focusing on waste reduction and efficient resource use, we aren’t just changing how we travel—we are training the future workforce to lead the way.
